From Karate Mom to Martial Arts Mentor: Barb Dawson’s 31-Year Journey to 5th Degree Black Belt at Nishime Martial Arts
When Barb Dawson first stepped onto the dojo floor, she had no idea it would lead to a lifelong passion, and ultimately, a 5th-degree black belt. Thirty-one years later, Barb isn’t just a martial artist; she’s a powerful example of what consistency, community, and courage can build.
From Supporting Mom to Student
Barb’s martial arts journey began in an unexpected way…on the sidelines.
“My kids were taking karate and I was there all the time,” Barb recalls. “Doug Adamson of Adamson Karate in Indianapolis started a moms’ class and I really liked it.”
That casual introduction sparked something lasting. When her family moved to Cincinnati, she was referred to Nishime Martial Arts, and she never looked back.
The First Throw: Discovering Strength
One moment still stands out from her early training days: the first time she successfully threw a partner during practice.
“I realized, I can do this. It was empowering.”
For many students, martial arts is about discovering new strengths, and for Barb, that discovery became a driving force.
Motivation: Fitness, Self-Defense, and Encouragement
Barb stayed committed because of the perfect mix: physical health, personal growth, and the support of her instructors.
“Hanshi is very encouraging if you put in the work,” she says. “I liked that I was getting exercise and learning self-defense at the same time.”
Earning the 5th-Degree Black Belt: A Milestone with Meaning
Reaching 5th-degree black belt wasn’t just about skill; it was about resilience.
“When Hanshi asked if I wanted to test, I was hesitant. My health wasn’t great at the time… but it turned into the carrot I needed.”
Despite facing breast cancer and recovering from knee surgery, Barb pushed through.
“Some days I could barely get through class. But I really wanted to achieve that rank.”
Overcoming Doubt with Community
Like many martial artists, Barb had moments of uncertainty. But she found strength in her training partners, especially Don Brice and Steve Carbaugh.
“We met weekly to train for the test. That support helped me mentally and physically.”
At Nishime Martial Arts, community and mentorship are more than words. They’re the foundation for growth, resilience, and lifelong success.
Evolution Through the Ranks
Thirty-one years of training have given Barb a deep appreciation for martial arts as a discipline and an art.
“As you advance, you understand body mechanics better. Kata starts to make sense. It’s not just movement; it’s meaning.”
She’s also gained something less tangible but even more powerful: confidence.
“Sometimes, when I feel like I can’t do something, I tell myself, You’re a Black Belt. You can do this, too.”
A Female Martial Artist in a Male-Dominated World
Barb spent much of her career in male-dominated fields, but she never let that stop her.
“Hanshi expects the same standards from everyone. I’ve always felt accepted, even when I was the only woman in class.”
That inclusive atmosphere has helped many women thrive at Nishime Martial Arts.
Guiding Lights: The People Who Made a Difference
Barb credits her success to a supportive circle – Hanshi, Shihan, training partners like JoAnn Rahaim, and longtime friends Steve and Don.
“Mary Beth told me not to get discouraged. And my husband has been incredibly supportive, even when I come home late from class!”
Advice to Young Women: Go For It
What would she say to girls and women considering martial arts?
“Do it. It’s fun and empowering to feel like you can take care of yourself.”

Barb Dawson’s story is a powerful reminder that martial arts isn’t just about fighting—it’s about becoming. Becoming stronger, more confident, more resilient. And for Barb, it’s about lifting others along the way.
